LEWISTOWN - A barn full of antiques along U.S. 522 North went up in smoke Saturday after a woman attempted to burn some trash in a barrel in the resident's backyard.
B.W. Macknair & Son, which is located 3055 U.S. 522 North, is owned by Norman Macknair and caught on fire around 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Mifflin County Regional Police said Macknair's wife, Jennifer, placed a cardboard box in a burn barrel with about two inches hanging over the edge around 4:30 p.m. in the backyard and went back into her residence. Police said about an hour later, Jennifer Macknair came out to find brush and the yard on fire.
Police said Jennifer Macknair placed a call to 911, but it was already too late. The barn, a three-bay garage, an office building, another garage with an addition on the back were completely damaged as a result of the fire.
Luckily, the Macknairs' residence only received some minor damage to the north end of the house.
"It (the house) showed some scarring," said Cpl. Brian Pully, a fire investigator with Mifflin County Police.
Two other homes across the roadway were damaged as a result of the intense heat. Police said one home at 3072 U.S. Route 522 North sustained cracked windows and melted siding while another home next door sustained melted siding.
Police said no charges will be filed and the incident was ruled accidental.
